Unison rules

Like many other activists and an ex Branch Secretary of a diverse and very vibrant branch I always felt that my ability to act as a front line senior officer was sometimes restricted by what I thought was a plethora of rules and regulations, but as I got older and hopefully wiser I understood and was clearer about why these rules and regulations were introduced and why they must be followed always.

Rules and regulations including procedures did not just grow on a tree on Streatham High road on a Tuesday afternoon they were processes thought of carefully, looked at, considered and voted on at national conference every year, so anyone who says that these rules are undemocratic is ignoring the essence of democracy. It is important that the national union does not, however, use the book to get people who they may not agree with politically and with situations such as that dialogue and discussion must be the first step. We do however have to accept that no one member is above the rule book!
